Power BI Gallery – Advanced Time Slicer by CTP

Development of a new Power BI visual

The Power BI team from Microsoft has done an incredible job in pushing the boundaries of data visualizations. Since the announcement of an open-source framework for Power BI visualizations a couple of weeks back, a lot of things have happened. Two of the amazing things are the Power BI visual contest and the Power BI gallery.

We were very excited once we heard about the new possibilities and we took the opportunity right away to develop our own custom Power BI visual called Advanced Time Slicer.

The Advanced Time Slicer or “zoomed” Line Chart, will display a miniaturized preview of the data for the provided time period – the overview view. Details of the selected measure are displayed in the top chart – the details view. The time period can be adjusted in the slicer by moving the relevant time-window. The details view will update its content accordingly. This will allow the user to investigate the measure and its time dependency in more detail.

So, how can you use this new visual with your own data?

Quite easy in fact – just navigate to the Power BI visual gallery, search for the visual and select. Once the details window opens, hit the download button and save the .pbiviz file:

Import the downloaded file into your Power BI Desktop:

In the next step you can bind your data to the corresponding input fields:

And finally you’ll arrive with an Advanced Time Slicer on your own data:

A full demo of the Advanced Time Slicer visual is available on

Have fun playing around with your own data.

    Hi Pedro,

yes this visual is working and we are using it in our environment. Can you please make sure, you are passing a date field to the “x-axis”? In case you still face some problems: can you please send a screenshot of your error and a description of what you have done to: powerbi@ctp.com? Thanks, Darko

    Hi,
A quick question – does this object work as a slicer? If I have another chart on my report (using the same date field), and I use the slicer – I do not see anything happening with my chart – is there any setting I should be aware of?
And for some reason there is no link to the full demo of the slicer in the blog… It just says “A full demo of the Advanced Time Slicer visual is available on “…
