Performance is Responsive

These days everyone talks about responsive web design, the concept which tries to make a webpage look good on every screen size. A very good approach to designing a responsive layout is progressive enhancement and graceful degradation. But that alone is not enough! A layout that can adapt to each screen is only the first step to making your webpage mobile friendly. We need to design the application lightweight and with high frames per second (fps) rendering on a mobile device so that the performance is responsive to our needs of making mobile friendly webpages!

Performance is better user experience

A webpage has to load quickly. Fast page load time builds trust in your site. It makes users want to come back to your webpage, more users choose your site over a competitor’s site, and more people will trust your brand. Users expect pages to load in two seconds, and after three seconds, up to 40% of users will abandon your site.

Performance is money

To pretty much everyone, the saying “Time is Money” is known. So why then, do only a few companies invest in such a strategy? It has been evaluated, that for a page load slowdown on Amazon of just one second could cost $1.6 billion in sales each year. Google has calculated that by slowing it’s search results by just four tenths of a second they could lose 8 million searches per day – meaning that they wouldn’t be able to suggest as many online adverts. Fast load time is not the only performance improvement you have to do. Browser speed rendering is also very important. Rendering speed should never be lower than what the human eye can capture when watching images change on a display (Normally this is around 30fps). Google Chrome has a tool to measure painting speed and gives a feedback which piece of code slows rendering down.

Performance is SEO

Google increases page ranking of a webpage if is performant. Page speed has been a ranking factor since 2010. As web marketers, all aspects of the user experience must be considered, no matter what channel is driving a visitor to the website – be it SEO or PPC. Google provids a tool to measure the page speed. Check out how your webpage ranks.

Single Page Application as a key of performant web apps

Single Page Applications are a great instrument in order to make your webpage performant. A Single Page Application only downloads from the server it needs at that moment and only updates partials, not the entire page. JSON Objects are sent back and fourth from the server. A JSON object is about 30% smaller than a XML or HTML document. Single Page Applications also make asynchronous requests to the server. This allows developers to reduce the loading time of a page while the resource that is still downloading doesn’t stop the page rendering.

Conclusion

Investing money and effort in web performance will help every bussiness to improve it’s visibility, usability and conversion rate. It can make the difference between success and failure, especially for purely web based companies!
